Waterford Hypnosis

What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a deeply relaxed state of heightened awareness during which an individual has an increased receptivity to suggestions.
The conscious mind is bypassed allowing positive changes to be made at a subconscious level, where our beliefs and habits are embedded. Typical everyday states of hypnosis can include being unaware of our surroundings while engrossed in a television programme, or not remembering a part of a car journey that we apparently drove in a day dream.

What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes enabling you to find the alternatives you desire to your present unsatisfactory way of behaving, thinking or feeling.
It is a safe therapy and you remain conscious, alert and fully in control. Your senses will become even sharper while you receive hypnotic suggestions to make the changes with issues such as smoking, weight loss, anxiety, depression, phobias, IBS and much more!

So what does being in hypnosis feel like?
Although your eyes are closed, your awareness and concentration heightens. Reports of deep relaxation are universal accompanied by either heavy or light feelings, or that body parts have faded away. It is a very individual experience but you always remain in total control. Our specific methods ensure that even clients who think they feel no differently at the time, leave afterwards convinced they have been hypnotised. After you emerge you will have complete knowledge and memory of the content of the session.

Will I be asleep or unconscious?
No when you are in hypnosis you are fully conscious, awake and aware.
Generally clients are far too physically and mentally relaxed to bother moving but they remain perfectly capable of doing so at all times. You always retain the freedom to speak but you can never be made to divulge “secrets” or information against your will! You will remain fully in control of your mind and body for the duration of the session.

Will I say or do anything I would not normally do?
It is impossible for anyone to make you do anything against your will. You are always in control and while hypnotised your subconscious mind will simply reject any suggestions that do not comply with your moral code, belief system, or that would endanger your safety. If your purpose is to overcome your depression or a phobia, you must be completely willing to accept the suggestions we offer in order for any changes to occur.

Is Hypnosis medically approved?
Absolutely!!! Hypnosis and hypnotherapy have been approved by the American Medical Association since 1955. Medical Hypnosis is increasingly recognised as a powerful healing modality with applications in all fields of medicine. Using medical hypnotherapy, patients experience less bleeding, less swelling and overall recovery time is significantly decreased. An ever growing number of cancer patients are now turning to hypnotherapy as an outlet to successfully manage their pain.

We do our best to accommodate a convenient appointment time for all our clients, which is secured upon receipt of a booking deposit.

Is hypnosis dangerous?
Hypnosis is completely safe, harmless and natural. Dr. Louie P. Thorpe, Professor Emeritus, University of Southern California, states "Hypnotism is a natural phenomenon, and there are no known deleterious effects from its use."

What happens if I get stuck in hypnosis?
It is impossible for clients to become stuck in hypnosis because it is a voluntary state. You chose to allow yourself to enter this state and follow our suggestions. Therefore you can decide to leave this state, or just follow our directions to emerge from it at the end of your session.

There is no such thing as not waking up from hypnosis because nobody ever “puts you to sleep”. This is simply a common misconception distributed through the medium of television and stage shows. Occasionally a client becomes so relaxed that they drift into a normal sleep but they are gently awoken so as to continue the session.

What is self-hypnosis?
The use of self hypnosis is in some ways similar to the techniques undertaken in our clinics. It also involves going into a deep state of relaxation and focusing on an area of desired change. Although it is not as effective as one to one hypnotherapy, we still advocate its use because its effects are beneficial in reinforcing the work we do in our sessions. We give all our clients a relaxation cd to take home especially for this purpose.

Will I remember being hypnotised?
Generally speaking you will remember the entire session. However, occasionally during a session we uncover unpleasant episodes from a person’s past that were kept hidden from their conscious mind. The therapist can structure the client’s emergence so that their conscious mind remains protected from the details of the trauma.

The subconscious can be directed to only let us remember what is safe and disregard uncomfortable thoughts. This method is effective once the source of the client’s problem has been resolved in the session. Afterwards the client is afforded access to the event without reliving the original impact.

Is hypnosis guaranteed?
The hypnotist can't make you do something you don't really want to do. So if you don't really want to quit smoking, you won't quit. However, hypnosis can improve your odds of success considerably if and when you're ready to quit. Hypnosis can also make the transition of a smoker to a non-smoker easier and faster.

Is hypnotherapy similar to stage hypnosis?
The truth is that they share very few similarities. Some people base their understanding of hypnosis on what they have seen on TV or stage shows. Stage hypnosis is purely for entertainment purposes while clinical hypnotherapy is an ethical practice seeking to assist individuals for issues as diverse as quitting smoking to pain control for cancer patients. People volunteer to become hypnotised on stage while some claim they are just going along with the fun and not even in hypnosis at all!

Can everyone be hypnotised?
Yes almost anyone of normal intelligence can be hypnotised. However there are a number of notable exceptions. The hypnotherapist cannot force you to go into hypnosis unless you consent to it. Additionally hypnosis will not take place if an individual is weak willed or if they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Will I reveal secrets when I am in hypnosis?
You will always only say exactly what you want to say. People are often surprised to learn that they are capable of telling lies under hypnosis. This is one of the reasons why we emphasise to clients that they must really want change in their lives if we are to work together!
During hypnotherapy sessions it is often beneficial for a client to reveal a secret. They can feel a sense of relief from the disclosure, or the so called secret may be relevant to the issue they are being treated for. If you reveal a secret while in hypnosis it’s because you choose to do so, not because you’re hypnotised. We maintain a strict code of ethics and everything you say remains 100% confidential forever.
